Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Her aunt worked in the evening shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received diplomas in English and African American Studies.
